Hike to Crater Lake/Lone Eagle Peak

Granby, Colorado

Description

Added by Sarah Wieck

Distance: 14 miles roundtripDuration: overnightElevation gain: 2,500 ftLocal favoriteOption to climb Lone Eagle Peak at the endWaterfalls, lakes, wildflowers and a peak make this a classic Colorado hike

The Hike to Crater Lake starts at Monarch Lake. Follows the left hand side of the lake for 1.7 miles, then the trail splits towards the Indian Peaks Wilderness. At this point it starts to climb and doesn't stop until you reach Crater Lake. It's a steady incline, but with climbing gear it could make it challenging. Cascade Falls is a good place to stop and have a snack - it's about halfway to the lake and has many photo ops.

Crater Lake is a 7 mile hike one way. It's not super hard but the distance and incline make it better as an overnight. If you're a climber you can climb the north face of Lone Eagle which towers over the lake.
