Ditch Camp - First solo overnight

Estes Park, Colorado

Description

Added by Sarah Wieck

This is an easy hike that winds through fields of wild flowers and passes the for location of Lulu City an old mining town. Ditch Camp back country site in Rocky Mountain National Park is a great place to set up base camp and explore the park and the Never Summer Wilderness.

A fear of mine, for some reason, was to spend the night by myself in the woods. All kinds of things went through my head. Bears, wolves, mountain lions, weird people, you name it I've already thought of all the bad things that could possibly happen to me. I decided to conquer that fear. My campsite of choice for this would be Ditch Camp #3. The adventure began at the Colorado River trail head in Rocky Mountain National Park. The hike to Ditch camp from the trail head is around 5 miles. It's mostly flat with a short 30-45 minute hike uphill at the end.
