5 Places to Get Outside in the DC Area
While DC may not be known as the most outdoorsy area, these five places offer stunning scenery that is difficult to compete with.
1. Shenandoah National Park
Depending on where you want to go in the park, Shenandoah is about an hour and a half to two hour drive from DC. Shenandoah has quite a bit to offer - from the challenging hikes like Old Rag to the stunning views of Hawksbill Mountain (below).
2. Great Falls
Just a 25 minute drive from DC, Great Falls is a great place to get outside. You can hike, kayak, and rock climb. You can access the well-known and aptly named Billy Goat Trail from the Maryland side. The Virginia side is better known for rock climbing.
3. Blue Ridge Mountains
Roanoake is a great place to access some of the best hikes in the Blue Ridge Mountains. It is about a four hour drive from DC, so it's a little far for a day trip, but not too far for a weekend trip. I highly recommend the hike to McAfee Knob, commonly referred to as the most photographed location on the Appalachian Trail.
4. Seneca Rocks / Nelson Rocks
Located in West Virginia, Seneca Rocks and Nelson Rocks are a climbers' paradise. Seneca Rocks offers great sport climbing, while Nelson Rocks offers a via ferrata climb for those who are not experienced rock climbers or are just looking to try something different.
5. Annapolis Rocks
Just a 50 minute drive from DC, there is a great vista called Annapolis Rocks. It's a relatively short and easy hike from the highway, and you can either sport climb or relax and enjoy the view.
