With a 420’ vertical drop Helmcken Falls is the fourth highest waterfall in Canada sending a massive volume of water plummeting over it’s edge daily. The best way to experience the true scale and power of this incredible landmark is via the Helmcken Falls Rim Trail.

Wells Grey Provincial Park is home to an abundance of trail networks, towering mountains and rushing waterfalls. The immense Helmcken Falls is arguably the most popular and sought out of these falls. A large parking lot and viewing platform is the most common means visitors view the falls from, however the Helmcken Falls Rim Trail offers a more intimate and exhilarating vantage point.

From the town of Clearwater drive 42 kilometers west on Clearwater Valley Road. There is a small gravel road and lot to the left with a sign indicating the Helmcken Falls Rim Trail, it is here the trailhead can be found. The trail runs parallel with Murtle River gently winding through a cedar and Hemlock forest. The hike is relatively easy with little variation in elevation offering many views of the river along the way.

The roaring falls can be heard well before reaching them as they plunge over the canyon’s edge. Once reached there are various viewpoints to watch the falls from and take photographs. A unique feature of this trail, for the bold adventurers, is the absence of fencing. Hikers are able to peer right over the edge of the canyon 420’ below. With this feature individuals should also exercise extreme caution as the ground is uneven and slippery at times. Expect a return trip of 2-3 hours.
