Walking the Main Range Track

Kosciuszko National Park, New South Wales

Description

Added by Stefanie Taylor

Incredible views across the whole of the alpine region.Check out three of the four cirque lakes on mainland Australia; Blue Lake, Club Lake and Lake Albina (Lake Cootapatamba is located a little further south).Native wildflowers in the spring and summer.Part of the walk includes summiting Australia's highest mountain, Mt Kosciuszko.Great photo ops.

A 22km loop over the Main Range of the NSW Snowy mountains. The clearly marked trail begins just below Charlotte Pass. After rock-hopping across the Snowy River the track ascends 5kms to Blue Lake lookout. Take the track to the right for a closer look at Blue Lake, the largest of the cirque lakes (16 hectares in area & 28 metres deep) and, due to it's low salt content, boasts the freshest water on mainland Australia. After making your way back to the main trail, the trail climbs up to Curruthers Peak. From here you walk along the (very) exposed ridge of the Main Range (regardless of the season, this ridge line can get bitterly cold & windy, but the views out to the west are spectacular and make it all worthwhile). You will pass Club Lake and Lake Albina before reaching a cross path, here you turn right and head up to the summit of Mt Kosciuszko. At 2,228 meters, Kosciuszko is the highest peak in Australia. After 'conquering Koszi' make the return trip via the old access road back to Charlotte Pass.
