Description

Haunting ruins of Fort Bowie, Butterfield Station, and the Old Cemetery.

The Fort Bowie National Historic Site commemorates the bitter conflict between Chiricahua Apaches and the U.S. military. From the NPS site: "It provides insight into a "clash of cultures," a young nation in pursuit of "manifest destiny," and the hunter/gatherer society fighting to preserve its existence."

The trail to the fort starts at the Apache Pass Road and is 3.5 miles long and gains 511 ft in altitude. The trail passes near several ruins including the Old Butterfield Overland Mail Station, the 2 fort ruins, an old cemetery dating from the 1800s, and the site of the Battle of Apache Pass.

The trail is not to difficult to hike and does have nice views of the surrounding Mountains.

There is a lot of history about the Apaches and the Chiricahuas in the area and the skirmishes that took place.

Food and gasoline are available in Bowie or San Simon, AZ.
