Avoid the crowds at Antelope Canyon Great photography opportunities Explore a tight and unique slot canyon Just 5 miles from Page, AZ

Waterholes Canyon is a great slot canyon alternative to Antelope Canyon near Page, Arizona. Antelope Canyon requires hikers to pay $45 per person to enter the canyon with a group. To avoid these crowds, and to have a slot canyon to yourself, explore the Waterholes Canyon instead!

You will need to obtain a permit to enter the Waterholes Canyon. Our group of four paid $48 total for our permit, which beats the $45 per person we would have paid for Antelope Canyon. These can be obtained at the Navajo Department of Parks and Recreation just outside Page, near the Upper Antelope Canyon trailhead.

Once you've obtained your permit, you will park at the Waterholes Canyon trailhead just south of Horseshoe Bend on Highway 89. From the parking lot, descend into the canyon just east of the Highway 89 bridge. The west side of the canyon is technical and requires rappels, but the east side of the canyon allows you to hike 2.5 miles through a beautiful slot canyon. The canyon is best seen in the mid to late afternoon, with "The Wall" portion of the canyon remaining beautiful during sunset when it receives a deep red glow from the fading sun.
