Backpacking the Canyon Creek
Gila County, Arizona

Out-and-Back
Description

The most of the Canton Creek area is in Mogollon Rim country. The Rodeo-Chediski fire caused major devastation of this area as seen almost immediately from the trail-head. It is, however a worthy sight, to gain perspective and respect for our fragile environment.
This is totally a beginner friendly backpacking trip and totally worth it.
Directions:From Payson, Travel 33 miles east on State Route #260. Turn Right on Young Road, Forest Route #512, and continue for 3 miles to FR #33. Turn left on FR #33 and travel for 5 miles to the Airplane Flat Campground site. At the east end of the campsite, you see a fence followed by a path leading into the canyon.
This hike starts from the East end of a campground at 6545 feet. It winds its way along a normally dry runoff about 1/4 mile to the creek/canyon bottom. After hiking 4 miles along the creek we scouted for the campsite. Once we setup our campsite we started exploring and we found a small swimming hole. This is where the fun starts, so plan on getting wet.
