Beautiful and Easy Destination

Obey the posted hours because there has been crime here past dark and you can get fined for lingering. However, in the day it is a wonderful destination with an easy hike and great swimming opportunities. There are many other trails in the area so you can further explore this part of the Owyhees. The area is heavily used and many people litter and I have seen graffiti. The facilities are not always open and are not kept up too well.

Beautiful, Less Popular

This is a gorgeous hike that passes through beautiful mountain meadows and burned areas. The lake is gorgeous and surrounded partly by marsh, but also has several good campsites. It makes for a great easy backpacking destination and can be paired with a hike to Hard Creek Lake. Mosquitos here are bad given the marsh so cover up and bring bug spray. We saw hardly any other people there on a summer weekday.

Fun Visit

This is a great place to go if you’re looking to use up some time in Boise or are just looking for a quick outing. Freak Alley is a great place for photography and for just enjoying the street art.

Very Popular

This really is a must do if visiting Boise, although don’t expect to be alone at pretty much any time of the day. There are beautiful views of Boise at the end and it is an enjoyable foothills hike, although I would recommend trying other hikes in the foothills other than just Table Rock.

Busy but Beautiful

Floating the Boise River is really a must-do for any local. It’s an easy, family-friendly float and can be done in just about anything that floats. I’ve seen people on mattresses, unicorn floaties, SUP and more. Because it’s so popular it can be very busy and parking is almost impossible to find in the afternoon and especially on weekends (in which case I recommend putting in somewhere other than Barber Park). The river, when packed with people, also means you’ll never really be alone. Many people have loud music playing and some are even drinking and smoking, so be respectful of others on the river. There are many opportunities to swim so be looking out for people jumping off rocks, rope swings, and bridges. Go in the morning or earlier in the season for fewer crowds.

Amazing Hike

It took us about an hour to reach to the top of the largest sand dune. It had us panting quite a bit, but the gorgeous views of the sunset and stars were very much worth it! The rest of the park is great as it holds a lot of opportunities for camping, picnicking, fishing, and hiking up other smaller sand dunes. The visitors center is well kept and the facilities have always been very clean. The fishing in both ponds has always been excellent, though very weedy, making a kayak necessary.

Beautiful but Confusing Directions

The actual hike to Stack Rock is beautiful and I would highly recommend for anyone in the Treasure Valley. However, there are many different ways to reach Stack Rock. It ended up being an 11 mile hike for us as we started at the main trailhead and took a slightly longer way to reach the rock. Most people park on the road before the main trailhead to shave off two miles round trip. Make sure you accurately read a map to know which way you are going to the rock. It is a great day hike and I would recommend stopping for lunch on the way and enjoying the view.

Fun Stop

This is a fun, quick stop with a short hike and opportunities to explore around Balanced Rock. I was disappointed with the amount of graffiti in the area, but the rock itself was spectacular and a good subject for photography. This isn’t a day destination, more just a quick stop and look.

Well Maintained, Accessible and Enjoyable

Miracle Hot Springs is one of my favorite Idaho hot springs. Even in the winter it is easily accessible and it has a variety of pools, including private pools, at various temperatures. It is well maintained and has a friendly staff. There are good facilities and even domes to stay in overnight. I would recommend going during the week as it can get busy on weekends.

Good Afternoon Activity

This is a good family friendly area although beach space is limited. The lake is refreshing and fun to swim in, it’s a good afternoon activity to cool off.

Busy, Limited Parking, Don’t Go on a Windy Day

This is a popular excursion which means parking is difficult to find in the afternoon, especially on weekends. If going on a weekday in the morning you can expect smaller crowds and more of the water to yourself. The scenery is beautiful and there are many excellent swimming opportunities. However, don’t go on a very windy day, as paddling one way or the other will become very difficult, especially on a SUP. I believe you can check conditions online before you go and the rental place has warnings.

Beautiful Hike

This hike is relatively easy and absolutely gorgeous. The variety of scenery in the stark canyon walls, the green, crystal clear water, the waterfalls, and the vegetation make this a spectacular hike. The hike isn’t too difficult, the ascent and descent into the canyon is the only hard part but it is short and there is a chain to assist. I would love to swim and snorkel here, the water was crystal clear and there were bright green patches of moss. There were also clearly many trout, I didn’t try but I bet one could be successful in trout fishing.

Don’t Miss It

I came to the Camas Prairie for the bloom in late May and had just missed the peak. However, the bloom was still spectacular and the opportunities for bird watching were great. There isn’t actually great access to the flowers (there are fences and much of the land is marshy) and that hinders some photography opportunities but the bloom still remains impressive.

Stunning

I only hiked to the first lake and I would love to continue to the others. However, the hike in and of itself held stunning views and is relatively easy in terms of elevation gain for a Sawtooths hike. The first lake is really more of a pond and doesn’t have great access.

Beautiful, Popular Hike

This hike is one of the most popular in the Sawtooths given its accessibility. It is heavily used but one can find solitude in the mornings or evenings. The end views of crystal clear Fishhook Creek and the mountains make this a stunning destination.

Beautiful Views, Less Crowds

This hike offers beautiful views and significantly less crowds than hikes such as Fishhook Creek. I would recommend making this a sunset hike, it is an excellent destination for photography and to find a spot to relax and enjoy the beauty of the Sawtooths. There really is no destination, the hike is the destination.

Excellent Basecamp

Camping at Redfish Lake is an excellent opportunity to experience gorgeous views, a comfortable camping experience (especially at the larger sites like Glacier View) and access to Redfish Lake. However, I recommend making your campsite a base camp for exploring the Sawtooths with fewer people and actually getting into the mountains.

Excellent Hike Characteristic of the Sawtooths

This hike is just characteristic of the Sawtooths and offers stunning views of Redfish Lake Creek Canyon and many of the most famous peaks in the range. It is a slightly longer and more difficult hike than Alpine Lake, but the chain of three lakes mean more campsites and better opportunities for seclusion. The waterfall going down into the second lake makes for beautiful scenery. We heard several pika in the scree field above the highest lake. Sadly, the earthquake in March near Stanley knocked the famous Arrowhead above the lakes down.

Fascinating and Fun Hike

This, like other hikes at Craters of the Moon, is certainly a unique and fascinating hike. Large and small caves mean endless exploring, just be sure to bring the strongest headlamp or flashlight you have.

Unique Hike

This was definitely a unique hike, if you haven’t had the opportunity to hike to the top of a cinder cone I would highly recommend it! It was short and understandably strenuous for a short distance but very much worth it. There were strong winds the day of my visit so I didn’t linger long at the top, but there were spectacular views.

Fantastic Experience

There are actually six yurts in the Idaho City yurt system and this is one of my favorites. Although the hike is difficult and gains a decent amount of elevation over roughly a mile, the yurt and views are very much worth it. The yurt was very well kept and the views were phenomenal. Unfortunately we went on the night of a full moon and saw very few stars.

Beautiful but Heavily Used

This is a very popular trail and is heavily used. It is easy to see why it is so popular, the views on the drive up and throughout the hike are spectacular. The parking lot typically fills up relatively quick on weekends and in the summer so I would recommend going early or more in the off season. I was disappointed to see how much trash was left by people at the lake.

Great Adventure

If visiting in the winter, getting to Burgdorf is most of the experience. It is a beautiful snowmobile ride up and we had the entire hot springs to ourselves. The beautiful location and wonderful staff made it a wonderful experience. I would like to try staying at a cabin there sometime.

Excellent Hot Springs

Gold Fork is in my top three favorite Idaho hot springs. It has been developed beautifully and is situated right in nature with gorgeous forest views. There are multiple pools to move between at different temperatures. The changing rooms are very small and bathrooms are just outhouses but small facilities add to the charm. My only problem with this hot springs is the road. It is not very accessible in the winter and there are constantly cars sliding off the road. Otherwise, this is an excellent hot springs.
