Diablo Lake Canoe Adventure!

Rockport, Washington

Description

Added by Ramona Arne

Diablo lake is an often over looked gem by many people who are heading to the larger neighboring Ross Lake. The jade green calm water of Diablo Lake offers breath taking and well maintained camping spots that are only accessible by boat. Extra bonus is that these state park'esque prime camping locations also boast basic bathrooms, platform docks and spoil you with tent pads placed a perfect distance from the lake edge. The views, while bringing to mind photo spreads of last months outdoor magazine, blend with the soothing sounds of water caressing the shore while you lazily lounge within an exposed tent and grandly contemplate the deeper more beautiful aspects of life.Once you are rested, take the canoe or boat back out and venture up the lake towards the Dam treating yourself to even more majestic views of waterfalls, canyons and hidden coves.Diablo lake hosts 3 boat in campgrounds-Thunder point is the largest and contains 3 campsites with each containing 2 tent pads each.Buster Brown has 3 sites, one with 2 tent pads and 2 sites with 1 tend pad each.Hidden Cove, the smallest (but another gem) contains one site with 1 tent pad.

Access to Diablo lake is via the north Cascades Highway in Whatcom County. For a great canoe put in location- access is easiest from Colonial Creek campground in which you can park your car in the parking lot. Back country permits are required and cannot be issued more than 24 hours in advanced but you can obtain these permits through a local ranger station.Once you are parked and your gear is loaded into your canoe (or other boat) the 3 different campgrounds are roughly a 40 minute paddle from colonial creek campground (you can only really go one direction so don't worry).
