Hike from Collins Gulch to Germania Pass

Alta, Utah

Distance: 5 miles roundtripElevation gain: 2,000 ftViews of Alta MountainsAway from the cityExplore a large, mountainous terrain

Drive to and park at the Goldminer's Daughter Lodge. There isn't a distinct trailhead, but if you head towards the visible switchbacks, you will eventually find yourself on the trail! It is right next to a very steep service road - the beginning of the trail is also very steep.

You'll eventually reach a ski lift that is next to a running stream. The ski lift is in an open meadow area, with lots of mountains surrounding you. The ski lift (marked as Wildcat Basin) is a great place to stop for a snack.

This area is populated with wildflowers, and has many different paths to walk. You should keep farthest left, close to the ski building, and continue walking until you reach another fork. As you continue into the mountains, you will no longer be able to see the meadow where you came from.

You should then start to come upon a long reddish line on the mountain - this is a stream colored by mineral deposits from further above. Keep walking, and you will see a small cabin of sorts on the right of the trail, which leads you to see the red stream and a door in the mountain. This is a small diversion off-trail.

Trust the trail, and keep walking up towards the ski lift you'll see sitting at the top of the mountain. The ski lift is called Germania Pass. At this point, you can continue to the right and go to the ski lift you'll see in the distance, or stop here. There should be small pools of water below, and huge mountains in the distance.

There is not a lot of sun cover on this trail. You'll run into people on this hike in the summer, but it is not crowded like the other hikes you'll find in this canyon. Also note that despite others' accounts of this hike, you won't be able to see Cecret Lake from Germania Pass (you'd have to continue on the descending trail).
