Summiting Mt. Ogden (Summer 2015)

Ogden, Utah

Description

Added by Dana Tran

Amazing scenery: wildflowers, forests, waterfalls, the entire Ogden valley + Great Salt Lake as you gain elevationMt. Ogden is one of the higher and more prominent peaks in the Wasatch with an elevation of 9,465 ft.

If you plan on summiting this peak in the summer, start early in the morning (5AM). It is approx. 13.1 miles roundtrip which will take several hours, and hiking it in high temperatures is not enjoyable. There are also lots of mosquitos at the beginning of the hike. I would recommend this in the spring.

You hike begins with lots of forest surrounding and a dirt path. Eventually the path will consist of larger rocks and a stream to the right. As you continue the bushes become thicker and reach across the trail- making you walk through twigs and branches for about a mile. You are gradually gaining elevation the entire time. There will be a bend in the trail that will be saddle- lots of sun exposure. This part of the trail can be redundant, but will will eventually reach a small stream and lots of wildflowers. As you continue hiking the trail will become less strenuous and marked with rock piles. The trail will eventually reach the maintenance road, which is very steep. My friend recommended that you break this last part into sections- where you push though steep parts and rest at the flattened. To reach the top of the peak, the very last part is a rocky trail (orange-y colored). My friend and I spotted a snake at this part, so be cautious.

At the very top you can look into the Ogden valley in the west, and if you turn around to the east, you can see Snowbasin. There are also lots of different butterflys at the top, which was very pretty.

There are also little critters everywhere throughout the entire trail: especially near the top there are bees and flies flying around constantly.
