The hike to charlies bunion is a 8.1 mile round-trip hike, featuring a steady elevation climb, with numerous rewards. In the spring and summer, you will be able to see a variety of wildflowers, and during every season you will be rewarded with a breathtaking view of the North Carolina Smokies.
Starting at the newfound gap parking lot, you are on the state line of North Carolina & Tennessee. You begin the journey along the Appalachian Trail, and quickly begin to gain some serious elevation. Averaging a whopping 405 foot elevation gain a mile, you quickly start to feel the burn in your calves. Before you reach the final destination, you will pass Icewater Springs shelter, a shelter available for reservations year round. Once at the peak, you navigate onto a rocky outcrop famously known as "Charlies Bunion". Sitting at around 6100 feet, you feel like you are on top of the world. Suddenly, all of your hard work is instantly rewarded. A breathtaking view of mountain ranges from the north, west, and east are all in view.
