Hike the shortest hike ever to an awesome waterfall and river - beautiful in all seasons!
The hike to Auger Falls is short, flat, and way worth it! There is a huge, well-marked parking lot on the left if you're heading south on Route 30 just past Speculator, NY. The first couple hundred feet of the trail is along a wide snowmobile path and the trail turns off toward the left into the woods and away from the road (look for the trail register just inside the tree line).
Head down the half-mile long trail, following the ever closer sound of rushing water. When you get to Auger Falls, you'll know. There's a cliff that overlooks the falls that is a great spot for a photo op. Be careful if you're there in the winter as it is very slippery. After you've seen enough from this overlook, head a little further down the trail above the falls where there is a nice flat, open area to sit for a while and eat lunch. You could also fish from any of the rocks that jut out into the river or string up a hammock along the bank.
When you're ready, head back the way you came or continue along the unmarked herd trail upstream along the river. You'll pass an excellent swimming hole a ways down the trail right before the trail heads left into the woods and dumps you into the parking lot.
The trail is busy in the summer, but why wouldn't it be? Stop at Lakeside Licks for Ice Cream in Speculator (it's way better than King of the Frosties) or at Timberline Cafe for an ADK latte on your way home.
