Devil's Kettle
Grand Marais, Minnesota
Description
Added by Chandra Fuhrman
The Devil's Kettle is a waterfall that splits into two separate flows. One side continues down the river, and the other goes into a whirlpool into the ground. For years scientists have been trying to find out where the water goes from there, but no one has been successful yet. The water simply disappears into the ground and is a bit of a mystery.
A beautiful hike that parallels the river. It goes up and down to the waterfalls and beyond. You could hike all the way to Lutsen Mountain and backpack as the two trails connect. The surrounding evergreen forest is full of mushrooms and small wildlife. On the day we went it had rained hard the night before, so there were plenty of puddles and the humidity was high. Its a one mile hike from the trailhead beginning in Judge C. R. Magney State Park, just outside Grand Marais, MN. The terrain itself can be challenging for beginners as there are quite a few flights of stairs and a few changes in elevation. It may be a good idea to leave more time than you think you need in case you need to take breaks. Plus you'll have so much fun exploring and taking in the views that time will fly by! We made a day of driving up from Duluth and exploring the North Shore. Definitely add this walk to your trip along Lake Superior!
