Historic New Harmony, Indiana honors two unique communities from the early 1800's. The Rappites located here in 1814. They were fleeing from religious persecution and awaiting the impending millennium. In 1824, the Owenites brought many great scientists and philosophers into the area when they purchased the Rappites holdings.
Today, the historic district located on the banks of the Wabash River offers many original log cabins, churches, taverns, and cemeteries. It also has blended these relics with a new age arts district with an opera house, sculpture park, and a walking/biking trail along the river.
Harmonie State Park is located "on the banks of the Wabash" four miles away from the historic district. A swimming pool, picnic areas, ravines and pristine landscape await you here. Trails for walking, biking and nature hikes also await within the park.
New Harmony's history and Harmonie State Park make for a great weekend in Southern Indiana.
