Explore St. Emlo, a Colorado Ghost Town

Description

St. Elmo is the most well-preserved ghost town in Colorado, and has a unique mystery and peacefulness that should be experienced by all. Located right next to Mt. Princeton and Mt. Antero off of Colorado Road 162, it makes for an easy weekend or day trip in all seasons.

St. Elmo was abandoned in the early 1920s, and left to deteriorate like most other abandoned mines and mining towns. However, a special group of people took this on as a project and preserved it so that the town can be seen today and history can be remembered.

There is a functioning general store that resides in the same building as the one from the town's mining boom that can be utilized in summer, but remains closed in winter. For a minimal price, there is also a very small guest cabin that can be rented out and a "ghost town guest house" bed & breakfast. Check out Iron City Campground for camping.

There are many trails on the way to St. Elmo and around the town. They make for easy hiking in summer or winter snowshoeing. There are stunning mountain views wherever you go. In summer, the ghost town may see crowds but they're never too large. In winter the town is incredibly peaceful and a great place to relax as it is very quiet (besides the occasional weekend snowmobilers). The road in winter is nicely maintained and a good drive, weather permitting.

Because the town is so well preserved, you can look in the windows and see antiques and abandoned items. Everything seems to be placed just as if it were 1900. The town is larger than I imagined it would be when I first went, and there any many roads and streets to explore! It is a must see for any Colorado adventure, and one of the most magnificent ghost towns in America.
